Project Description

Toll Plaza Demolition, Structures 14, 15 and 55. This aggressively scheduled project, worth approx. $20 million, began with the Go Live of the statewide auto tolling system and the demo of the toll booths, tunnels and associated infrastructure on the Mass turnpike.  Once the toll booths were removed, a redesign of the highway geometry was necessary, resulting in project wide changes to the retaining walls and asymmetrical median barriers.  A mix of  precast and cast-in-place barrier, totaling 4,500LF, was installed in a short phasing window in order to stay on schedule.  Over 2.5 miles of paved roadway and 100 plus drainage structures were installed in the projects’ 13 month duration.  The project also included controlled ledge blasting near the sensitive Hultman Aqueduct, secant pile walls, multiple existing bridge repairs and a new off-ramp with bridge spanning the aqueduct.
